Cougar Mountain

Cougar Mountain is a great training and benchmark climb. The route is largely protected from the wind, has little traffic, and has no traffic signals or stop signs. Its profile has 1,000' of vertical over 2.25mi. The start is at the Watch for Ice/Buckle Up sign and the finish is at the black 17104 mailbox at the crest. The 1mi mark is a horse sign on the false flat just after coming out of the woods after the major left and right switchbacks. The protocol is to take the right turn off of Newport Way on to SE 54th and start your computer with an easy rolling start as you pass the sign. Immediately maintain lactate threshold power or, if you only have a heart rate monitor, take about 45" to increase your HR to threshold and try to stay relaxed while holding it there. At the 1mi mark record your split time and, if you feel good, push 10 Watts higher for the 2nd half of the climb. The rollers become increasingly long and steep as you approach the crest. Stop your computer at the black mailbox. To ride as a circuit course you can continue down the hill, take a right on Lakemont Boulevard, a left at the stop sign on 164th, and a right on Newport with an optional sprint to the Issaquah City Limits sign between Lakemont and Montreux drives.
