Mercer Island
|
Mercer Island is a great training and benchmark
time trial location. The route is largely protected from the wind, has little traffic, has no
traffic signals or stop signs over a 10.3 mile course, and is easily accessible
by bicycle from all cardinal directions. Its profiles have
470' of cumulative elevation gain in the clockwise direction and 410' of
gain with slightly steeper grades in the counter-clockwise direction. The start/finish
on the east side is on E Mercer Way at the crosswalk adjacent to the Jewish
Community Center about 200M south of I90. The finish/start on the west side
is at the crosswalk on W Mercer Way just south of SE 24th. The clockwise
route is preferred because of the easier grades, less interruption from left
turning traffic, and the similarity to the old USCF time trial course. In
fall and winter be prepared for wet roads and leaves on the curves of the NE
section. The preferred protocol is to ride cw starting from the east. Start
from a virtual standstill and use gearing so as to immediately obtain and then
maintain lactate threshold power or,
if you only have a heart rate monitor, take 45 seconds to get to your lactate
threshold heart rate and hold for the first 5 miles. If you feel better in the
second half, increase 10 watts.
To close the loop along the I90 trail add 3 miles.
